International weekend: Tomáš Hrůza

Rather than making “loud” statements, I prefer to make quiet, subtle observations that may otherwise go unnoticed, and then let the viewer draw his own conclusions incorporating his own personal experiences. I aim to take images that retain an honest quality, rather than being too perfect or enhanced to the point that they loose their natural feel.

My background has played a major influence on my philosophy as an artist and choice of subject matter. I grew up in a small town in a rural, mountainous area. I studied agriculture at secondary school and I spent my free time camping, hiking, skiing and observing nature. Growing up under a communist regime, travel outside of Eastern Europe was very restricted. This has created a desire to see the world, and I see myself as a pilgrim, traveling to different countries with a camera as my sketch book. I find myself primarily interested with themes of ecology, travel and memory, and choose images that incorporate all of these elements.
